The social contract in Egypt, Lebanon and Tunisia: What do the people want?

This article investigates the demand side of social contracts. It asks what people expect from their governments. Drawing on original, nationally representative surveys in Egypt, Tunisia and Lebanon, it explores popular preferences for three possible government deliverables contracts: provision economic services, protection physical harm political participation. Findings reveal that citizens governments to deliver all ‘Ps’ (even if this costs a price), yet preferring over participation they have prioritize. do not show robust among groups identified by economic, gender, educational communal differences.
